Where to go · Bodrum
Bodrum — a peninsula, not a town.
Bodrum town is one small part of it. The bays around it are quieter, prettier and completely different from one another. Picking the right bay is the whole job.
The short version
Bodrum at a glance
| How long | Four to six nights. Enough for two beach days, a boat day, one dinner in town and a day doing nothing. |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Bodrum–Milas airport (BJV), with direct flights from many European cities in season, or an hour from İstanbul. Transfers are 30–60 minutes depending on the bay. |
| Sea season | June to September. May and October are pleasant on land but the sea is brisk. August is hot and busy; September is the local favourite. |
| Style | More Aegean than Mediterranean — whitewashed walls, bougainvillea, small hotels, boats. Fewer mega-resorts than Antalya, higher prices, better restaurants. |
| Beaches | Mostly small bays with pebbles or platforms rather than long sandy strands. Many are beach clubs with sunbeds and service rather than public sand. |
| Getting around | The peninsula is hilly and the bays are separated by ridges. A car or a driver makes a real difference; taxis between bays add up quickly. |
Which bay
Six bays, six holidays.
People book "Bodrum" and get a bay that does not suit them. This is the part to get right, and it is the reason to ask someone who has been to all of them.
Bodrum town
The castle, the marina, bars and restaurants. Lively and loud in season. Good for a night or two, tiring for a week.
Yalıkavak
Superyacht marina, smart restaurants, expensive. Beautiful, and it knows it.
Gümüşlük
Fish restaurants with tables at the water's edge and a sunken city you can wade over. Quiet, low-key, our usual recommendation for couples.
Turgutreis & Bitez
Calmer water, family hotels, easier beaches for children. Less glamorous, more practical.
Torba & Göltürkbükü
Close to the airport, sheltered bays, a mix of large resorts and boutique hotels.
On a boat
A gulet for a few days along the coast. For a group or a family it is often better value than a good hotel, and it is the trip people remember.
Bodrum or Antalya?
They are not competing for the same holiday.
- Choose Bodrum forSmall hotels, good food, boats, bays, and evenings out. Better for couples and for groups of adults.
- Choose Antalya forLong sandy beaches, all-inclusive value, big family resorts and ancient sites. Better with young children and on a fixed budget.
- Bodrum costs moreNoticeably, in season. You are paying for scarcity and for restaurants rather than for square metres.
- Antalya has more to seeAspendos, Perge, Side. Bodrum has one castle and a lot of coastline.
- HonestlyIf it is your first trip to Türkiye and you want beach plus sightseeing, Antalya. If you have been before, Bodrum.
Questions
Before you write
Do I need to hire a car?
It helps a great deal — the bays are far apart and taxis are expensive. If you would rather not drive, a car with a driver for two or three of the days is a good compromise.
Is Bodrum good for children?
Yes, in the right bay. Bitez and Turgutreis have calm shallow water; Gümüşlük and Yalıkavak are less suited to small children. Tell us their ages and we will place you well.
What is a gulet trip actually like?
A wooden boat, a small crew, cabins, meals cooked on board, and anchoring in bays you cannot reach by road. Three to seven nights. For a family or a group of friends it is frequently the best value on this whole page.
Can I visit the Greek islands from Bodrum?
Kos is a short ferry away and Rhodes is reachable. Entry rules depend on your passport and can change — send us your nationality and we will confirm before you plan around it.
Start here
Tell us who is coming and what kind of week you want.
We will pick the bay first and the hotel second. That order matters here more than anywhere.
