Where to go · Bursa
Bursa & Uludağ — mountain air, two hours from İstanbul.
Thermal springs, an Ottoman capital, and a 2,500-metre mountain you reach by cable car. Cool in August, snowbound in February, and closer than people think.
The short version
Bursa at a glance
| How long | A day trip works. Two nights is better. One night is enough for the mosques and the mountain; two lets you add the thermal baths and Cumalıkızık without rushing. |
|---|---|
| Getting there | From İstanbul: ferry across the Marmara then a short drive — around two hours door to door — or drive via the Osmangazi bridge in about two and a half. We arrange the whole thing as one transfer. |
| Uludağ | A cable car from the city climbs to around 2,000 m. Cool in summer when İstanbul is sweltering, and a ski resort from roughly December to March. |
| Thermal springs | Çekirge district, where the hot mineral water has been used since Roman times. Several hotels have their own thermal baths. |
| What it is known for | First Ottoman capital — the Green Mosque, the Grand Mosque and the royal tombs. Also silk, and the original İskender kebab. |
| Best months | Year-round. April–May and September–October for walking; June–September to escape the heat; January–March for snow. |
Who it suits
Three quite different visitors come here.
Escaping the summer
Visitors from the Gulf and Iraq who want cool air rather than sun. Uludağ, thermal hotels and green mountains, with İstanbul two hours away. See the Saudi page.
History without crowds
The Ottoman Empire began here. The mosques and tombs are extraordinary and almost empty compared with İstanbul's. A good second or third trip.
A break during treatment
Close enough to İstanbul for a two-day change of air between appointments — quiet, easy and not physically demanding. Medical travel.
What to see
Two days, comfortably
The Ottoman city
Ulu Cami with its twenty domes and the fountain inside, the Green Mosque and Green Tomb, and Koza Han — the silk market, still a silk market. Lunch is İskender, obviously.
Mountain and village
Cable car up Uludağ in the morning for the air and the view. Then Cumalıkızık, a 700-year-old Ottoman village on the UNESCO list, for the afternoon.
Thermal baths
An afternoon in the mineral pools at Çekirge. Historic hammams for the traditional version, hotel spas for the comfortable one.
Honest notes
What we would tell a friend.
- Bursa is a real cityThree million people, traffic and industry — not a resort. The beautiful parts are specific places, not the whole of it.
- Uludağ in summer is not alpineIt is cool, green and a relief from the heat. It is not Switzerland, and photographs on booking sites can suggest otherwise.
- Snow season is short and busyWeekends in January and February fill up months ahead, and prices roughly double. Midweek is a different experience.
- The ferry makes the tripCrossing the Marmara is pleasant and skips the worst of the road. It is also weather-dependent — we build in a margin.
- Two days is honestAnyone selling you five nights in Bursa is selling you nights, not a plan. Combine it with İstanbul.
Questions
Before you write
Can I do Bursa as a day trip from İstanbul?
Yes, comfortably — ferry out early, mosques and the cable car, ferry back in the evening. You will miss the thermal baths and Cumalıkızık, but it is a genuinely good day.
Is there snow in summer on Uludağ?
No. Snow is roughly December to March. In summer the mountain is green and cool — which is the actual reason most of our guests go.
Are the thermal baths suitable for families?
Hotel thermal pools, yes. Historic hammams have separate men's and women's sections and a more traditional atmosphere — tell us which you would prefer and we will book accordingly.
Is it good for a large family group?
Very. Thermal hotels here are used to large bookings, distances are short and the days are not physically demanding. A common choice for Gulf families with grandparents along.
